Followership: Strategies for Creating Exceptional Followers
Leadership is the focus on almost all training given to newly promoted supervisors and managers. Rarely is there any discussion about how people serve as followers for most of their organizational lives, even while they may also be serving as leaders. Discussions during this lesson create an introspective atmosphere for students to be able to examine their own effectiveness as followers in their respective organizations. Five followership styles are discussed with specific strategies used to create successful followers with an emphasis on how to improve the motivation, satisfaction, and performance of an alienated/malcontented follower. Additionally, this lesson emphasizes the importance of followers leading up with their bosses, as well as leaders creating an environment where subordinates feel it is all right to hold their bosses accountable and give them constructive criticism. These are the major topics to be discussed throughout this lesson:
*Identifying the location where the student currently lands on followership style matrix.
*Identifying where current followers are on the leadership style matrix.
*Implementing Leader Strategies for making followers more productive and engaged with their job.
*Discussing when and how to “lead up” with organizational command staff.
